A Mining Sector Support (MSS) Programme consisting of 10 projects was funded by the EC until 31 December 2012. The MSS Programme’s overall objectives were to sustain the country’s economic performance through continued mineral production and exports and to alleviate poverty, increase employment opportunities and mitigate mine-induced environmental impacts. Its specific purpose was to enhance institutional capacities to effectively promote and regulate the mineral resources sector in order to reverse the trend of reduced private-sector mineral exploration. It aims at improving geo-scientific data acquisition, conservation, processing and dissemination, enhancing small-scale miner’s capacity and to improve mining environment monitoring and protection. The objective of this project was to undertake the final evaluation of the MSS Programme regarding relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact and sustainability and make recommendations for potential future actions.
